An homage to my favorite scene in Wes Anderson's "The Royal Tenenbaums" wherein Luke Wilson's character, Richie Tenenbaum, goes through a mental breakdown while Elliot Smith's "Needle in the Hay" plays in the background. Done using Photoshop CC and a Bamboo Create tablet.
Below, you can see how I've used only two basic Photoshop brushes for this painting - the right and left leaning angled brushes. I was also able to achieve the intended effect of the character's piercing gaze in the scene.
Below is the step-by-step process I used while working on the painting. 1) Lay down the background. 2) Draw in the line art. 3) Lay down very rough color blocking, 100% brush opacity. 4) Worked on the details and tonal /blending variations of the face, 60-80% brush opacity. 5) Worked on the details of the shaving cream, 60-80% brush opacity. 5) Application of highlights/highdarks as well as final touch-ups (Color Balance and Brightness/Contrast).
